singing sweetheart Carrie Underwood has been tapped to play Maria Von
Trapp in an NBC adaptation of the "Sound
Of Music."
A network executive revealed on Friday that the former "American Idol" star will perform in a three-hour broadcast based on the beloved Broadway musical. It will air in 2013.
"The Sound of Music" was the swan song of musical writers Rogers and Hammersteign. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer starred in the massively popular 1965 film, six years after the original show debuted on Broadway.
The production team behind NBC's "Smash" will produce the special. Executive Robert Greenblatt tells People.com, "Speaking for everyone at NBC, we couldn't be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp. She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist."
One of the most popular movie musicals
of all time, The "Sound of Music" is based on the true story of the
Trapp Family Singers. Andrews stars as Maria, a young nun in an Austrian
convent who regularly misses morning prayers because she enjoys going to the
hills to sing. She winds up becoming the governess for the children of the
widowed Captain Von Trapp (Plummer). Maria falls in love with the Captain, and
rushes back to the Abbey so as not to complicate his impending marriage to a
glamorous baroness. Maria and the Captain finally confirm their love just
as Nazism pervades the country.
