Music Challenge-30

Your favorite song from this time last Year. . . . . . Paparazzi-Lady Gaga

It took a while for this song to grow on me, but I think its actually has a very pretty melody, minus the creepy, delusional, stalker like message. I like Lady Gaga's version, and I also love this version that I posted last year by the 6th grader named Greyson Chance. I don't know if this is exactly the same time of year that Paparazzi actually came out but there you have it. Challenge accepted, Challenge Complete.

A Song From Your Childhood. . . . ..If My Friends Could See Me Now-Sweet Chariot

All of the songs from Childhood stem from voice lessons or my mom. This Song reminds me of singing at my teacher's home. I was 6 or 7. I think this is the one song where we have home video of me singing this song in my basement. My sister always teased me. Its a silly song but its definitely nostalgic.

A Song that Makes You Feel Guilty. . . . . . Goodbye Earl-Dixie Chicks

I'm not sure what they mean by "makes me feel guilty." But here is my choice: first, because I love the Dixie Chicks. Second, this song sort of makes me feel guilty because the idea of murder shouldn't be so funny or entertaining.

Gratitude on Thursdays

So This Past I had my admissions interview at BYU. After I got my parking pass a lady gave me my name tag and took my picture. I was then led back to a room where there were 6 or 7 professors waiting to talk. I was so nervous. The first few questions I could not find my calm and peaceful place inside and my voice got all shaky.

They asked me how I first got interested in being an SLP, Why I was interested in BYUs program, what did I have to offer or bring to my cohort if I was accepted into the program. They were curious about my career goals and if I had given much thought about a subject for my thesis. The two questions that caught me off guard the most was when I was asked share a time when I have had to accept and apply feedback or criticism. The second questions was to share an experience where I had to deal with someone exhibiting bad, and inappropriate behavior. I talked about my music lessons and how much critiquing private teachers and solo and ensemble festivals will bring. Feedback is really how you improve.

I used my job shadow experience from over the summer to answer the second question. I talked about a special needs girl that was coming to therapy. She was so stubborn and was nervous around me so she refused to talk or work at all while i was in the room. Sometimes I had to observe from the hall, sometimes I snuck in the room while her back was to the door. I was able to do a few activities and games with her to show her I was there to be her friend. I made it my personal mission to win her over. She warmed up a little but not a ton. Dr. Nissen then asked me whether music lessons had taught me anything that would be valuable in my graduate studies. Music has taught me persistence and hard work. Achieving a goal or developing a talent takes time and its not full of successes. There are definitely ups and downs, such as forgetting your memorized piece, or freezing at the piano, or crying as you played at your first violin recital. I drove my siblings crazy with my practicing, but I am pretty sure they got over it =-)

All in all the interview definitely got better as things went along. I have had classes from all of the professors and they were all very nice and understanding. I am supposed to hear back the first of March so wish me luck!

Thursday Night after my interview and after work, I got to go to Relief Society Meeting and hear this lovely lady talk. Meet Meg Johnson.

From her Website-
Meg Johnson has motivated tens of thousands of people across the globe with her motto: When life gets too hard to stand, just keep on rollin'!

Meg fell off a cliff and broke her neck in 2004, at the blossoming age of 22. She spent four months in the hospital recovering from multiple injuries and returned home without the use of her legs, back, stomach, or hands - a full quadriplegic.

Wheelchair bound and determined, Meg refuses to sit still. Since she was paralyzed, Meg has…

  • Competed at the national Ms. Wheelchair America pageant in New York
  • Founded and directs Ms. Wheelchair Utah
  • Instituted a service outreach program with Intermountain Healthcare
  • Authored several books

I was so happy that I was able to go and listen to her. Despite her disability she is the funniest and most perky person you will ever meet. We were all laughing the entire time. I highly recommend finding an opportunity to hear her speak. Her story is truly inspiring. It made me realize, despite my limitations, how truly blessed I am. No matter what obstacles we face, there is always something to smile about, always something love, always something to be grateful for. Life is too short, don't let it pass you by.

A Song That Makes You Laugh. . . . Pray For You-Jaron and the Long Road to Love

This song just gets me every time. I think it speaks to every single person who hears it at some level. We've all felt this way about someone whether it be a bad break up or you are mad at a friend. It's not nice to have thoughts like this but it still is fun to listen to.

A Song You Want to Play at Your Funeral. . . . . Feels Like Home -Chantal Kreviazuk

So I first heard this song on a CD my mom had in her car. I had no idea that it was written by Randy Newman and that it was so popular. I was amazed at all of the different covers of this song by so many different artists. I am pretty sure this is the version that is on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It was also on the movie My Sister's Keeper. I know its supposed to be a love song, but the phrase "back home where I belong" reminds me of Heaven.

A Song You Wish You Heard on the Radio. . . . . . . . . . Stay Here-Lee Dewyze

His album Live it Up is so great. You all should go buy it. His song Sweet Serendipity is already on the radio, but this song should definitely be also. If you like this one I'd recommend Earth Stood Still and Brooklyn Bridge.
Anyway, Lee has an interesting voice that's edgy yet smooth. He's definitely got a John Mayer sound to him. I wish I could find a way to do a mash up with this and Hey Soul Sister by Train.

A Song that You Used to Love But Now Hate. . . . .I'll Follow You Into the Dark-Death Cab For Cutie

So I am doing things a little backwards today. When this song first came out, I didn't like it at all. It was creepy like this guy was trying to stalk some poor girl. I didn't get it. Now that I have listened to it and understand the message better I think it is a very sweet song. I used to hate this song but I really enjoy it now.

A Song That Describes You. . . . . . . . . . . . Who I Am-Jessica Andrews

I know this song is more than a little cheesy, but I think the message of this song is a good one. I am happy with who I am right now. Family is one of the most important things to me and I pretty much look a lot like my dad ( as is mentioned in the song). I do have friends who are great to put up with me and I am definitely not perfect, but that's okay.

A Song No One Would Expect You To Love. . . . . . . . . . Paralyzer-Finger Eleven

This choice has to do not only with the style of the song, but the band as well. This song is more edgier than I usually prefer. Its hard and its grungy, and so are the guys in the band. They are definitely rockers, with their punk style and long hair. It is a far cry from the clean cut guys with heavenly voices that I usually like to listen to. It's such a great song though. It gets your blood pumping.

This is completely old school, but I really love this song. During Junior High, I had to endure discussions about whether Back Street Boys or NSync was better, the boyband war. I never really understood it at the time. I always preferred Back Street Boys, but this song just makes me smile.

I don't know that I hate The Black Eyed Peas per se, but its unfortunate that they sound so much better on the radio than they do live. There live performance at the Super Bowl yesterday was not that impressive. That, and the fact they they turned a great song, Time of My Life, into a farce, and they are not anywhere near my list of favorite bands or music.

This Song Will Forever Remind me of my Grandparent's 60th Wedding Anniversary. My older sister's have sung together for as Long as I can remember. This was a rare and once in a lifetime opportunity for all 4 of us to sing and it was a lot of fun. A Song That Reminds You of Somewhere . . . . . .Had a Dream (The Judds)

I have to give a shout out to the bluegrass history of our family. This Judd song in particular reminds me of visiting my sisters and cousins in Chicago while they performed at Six Flags. They were one of the more popular attractions at the park, mainly because they were all so young, but oh so talented. I think that they are the reason I am still a Judd Fan Today. Not only does this remind of the actual Six Flags park, but it brings back so many memories of my mom and my aunt, violin lessons, band practice and family and bluegrass. . .. .and how Wildfire managed to survive through at least 3 phases.
