Confirmation: There will be a Wicked movie

As recently reported to Entertainment Weekly, "conversations are now starting" regarding the movie adaptation of the hugely successful Broadway musical, Wicked, says Producer Marc Platt.
"It's still a ways away," Platt said. "I would expect in the near future to begin the process of development. Therewill be a movie."
Universal Pictures owns the rights to Wicked, and has potentially begun the process already. It's been reported that the company have sought out Director Stephen Daldry to adapt from stage to screen. Daldry has received Academy Award nominations for his work on Billy Elliot, THE HOURS and more recently received a 2011 nomination for EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE.

Winnie Holzman, who penned the musical's book based on Gregory Maguire's novel, will reportedly also write the screenplay. The film has been talked about for some time, but has been slow in production; no casting or further members of the creative team have been announced, despite rumours that Glee star, Lea Michele, is in talks to portray everyone's favourite green witch, Elphaba.
Wicked opened on Broadway in October of 2003, starring Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, and is about to reach its 10th year on Broadway. Boasting two national tours and productions in both Chicago and California, the musical has earned more than $2 billion in the US alone, since its debut. A film adaptation seems the logical next step.

Robert Downey Jr. Talks Tone, Ben Kingsley and More in 'Iron Man 3'

If you're like us, you celebrated the holidays by rewatching Shane Black's terrific detective story Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which - like many of Black's films - is set at Christmastime. It's also a great primer for the dynamic we can expect between Black and his lead actor Robert Downey Jr. in the upcoming Iron Man 3, which recently made our list of 30 Films We'd Be Sad To Miss If the World Ends. We've seen someexcellent trailers so far, and Downey recently spoke with the mag Nuts UK (NSFW link, via Comic Book Movie) and offered up a few more tidbits about what Marvel has in store to kick off its cinematic Phase Two. Gangster Squad - January 11th

Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and-if he has his way-every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart. Gangster Squad is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD's efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.   Click here to see the rest ofthe preview.

Sunday Social-30

Sunday Social

1.  What is the best New Years Eve you've ever had?
I know this sounds really dumb but my favorite New Year’s Eve was about 2 years ago. We got a dinner and treats and stayed at home for a movie marathon. We watched at least 3 movies. One was Temple Grandon (excellent), Wall Street (Money Never Sleeps), and a movie called The City of Your Final Destination, which was a bit strange.

Maybe this year I'll give this stack a try.

2.  Are you doing anything for NYE this year and if so what?

This year we are going to have a big family get together with my cousins. We’re going to veg out on good food and play a ton of games. We’re going to have fun and just party and have fun.

Zac Efron & Marcia Gay Harden Lead JFK Assassination Film 'Parkland'

The assassination of President John F. Kennedy is one of the most iconic moments in American history, fueled largely by the controversy and conspiracy theories surrounding it. Tons of films and documentaries have devoted hours to exploring this topic - including Oliver Stone's star-studded 1991 movie JFK - and now a new movie called Parkland is telling the story of what happened on that fateful day just in time for the event's fiftieth anniversary. A press release reveals Zac Efron, Marcia Gay Harden, Paul Giamatti, Billy Bob Thorton, and Silver Linings Playbook actress Jacki Weaver have all signed to star. Read more here.

Roger Corman Producing Eight Adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe Tales

Genre legend Roger Corman was a mentor figure to filmmakers like as James Cameron, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, and Curtis Hanson as they were coming up in the industry, but the talented producer/actor/director made a name for himself before that directing B-movie classics back in the 50s and 60s. He's best known for his film adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's work which teamed him with actor Vincent Price, and now THR says that Corman is returning to his roots by producing eight new film adaptations of Poe's stories. First up is House of Usher, written by Mike McClain (The Haunted), which shoots next year. Click here to read more.

Universal in Early Development for Sequel to Musical 'Pitch Perfect'

Even diehard movie fans, including readers and writers of this site, have a few movies every year that slip through the cracks and we just don't get around to seeing. Sadly for me, one of those was Universal's Pitch Perfect, the college acapella film starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, and Elizabeth Banks. I've heard nothing but amazing things about it, and it's definitely on my list of things to catch up on as the year comes to a close, but here's some good news for people who want more from the ladies of the Bellas. MovieWeb (via The Film Stage) spoke with Skylar Astin who revealed a sequel is in early development. Read more here.

Rachel Weisz Gets Wicked on New 'Oz: The Great and Powerful' Poster

While trekking out to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the Star Trek Into Darkness prologue in IMAX theaters, I came upon a new poster for Oz: The Great and Powerful that hadn't yet been released anywhere else. And lo and behold, today that poster shows up on the Internet. There's a new one sheet that gives Rachel Weisz (?) the dark spotlight as the Wicked Witch.  Click here to view the poster!

12 Days of Christmas-Day 11

"White Christmas" is an Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide.
Accounts vary as to when and where Berlin wrote the song. One story is that he wrote it in 1940, in warm La Quinta, California, while staying at the La Quinta Hotel, a frequent Hollywood retreat also favored by writer-producer Frank Capra, although the Arizona Biltmore also claims the song was written there.
We know and love the Bing Crosby version but here are two versions I think you'll like.

Rascal Flatts

Michael Buble and Shania Twain
