The animal shall not be measured
by man. In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and
complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained,
living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not
underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life
and time.

Omar E. Rivera (who is blind) and
his yellow Labrador retriever, Salty, escaped unharmed from the Sept. 11, 2001
disaster with many of his co-workers from the 71st floor office. With one hand on
Salty's harness and another on a friend's arm, Mr. Rivera descended into
unknown world filled with smoke and
sickening smell of jet fuel. “Salty refused to leave my side even when another
co-worker tried to take it's leash”, Mr. Rivera said.
